Talking Tech Friday – Meebo

Meebo has been big in the library community over the last few years, but I think that an overview might still be useful.

What is it?

Meebo is a free, web-based instant messaging service that can aggregate your other instant messaging services into one log in, so that you can chat with anyone on those services by just signing in to one service. Additionally, since it’s web-based, you don’t have to download any applications, unlike most other instant messaging clients (Google Talk, MSN IM, AOL IM, Yahoo! IM, etc.). This enables you to log in and chat on any computer, wherever you might be.

How does it work?

As usual, you create a log in and password for Meebo, then give your name, email address, gender and age. After that, you can add other IM services by selecting which service (e.g. MSN IM) and giving your screen name and password. Meebo saves your account information, and you can change it at any time. After that, it’s one log-in for all of them!

One of the other particularly useful things about Meebo is the ability to make a Meebo Me widget that can be embedded into a website. Many libraries have used the Meebo Me widget as a chat reference application, so patrons can ask questions right there on the library website, as well as seeing when a librarian is online for reference.

Meebo also has Meebo Rooms, which allows for group chat, link sharing, and an option to embed videos.

Library Uses

As I’ve mentioned, the primary library use is for a chat reference or patron interaction tool. However, librarians could also create rooms to work with others on group projects, or special interest rooms for their patrons. Meebo is a fantastic, free, web tool, and they love librarians!

Here are a few local libraries with Meebo Me widgets:

If I missed your library using a Meebo Me widget, please correct me in the comments!

Update: I’ve added a Meebo Me widget to the sidebar of the blog – let me know what you think! I’ll keep it up there for the next week or so.
